Spy

“It's pretty safe to say that Spy was the most influential magazine of the 1980s. It might have remade New York's cultural landscape; it definitely changed the whole tone of magazine journalism. It was cruel, brilliant, beautifully written and perfectly designed, and feared by all. There's no magazine I know of that's so continually referenced, held up as a benchmark, and whose demise is so lamented.”
— Dave Eggers, from “Spy: The Funny Years”

Spy presaged the Web in terms of the multiple entry points and levels of information… [b]ut what ultimately makes Spy memorable, and missed, was its sense of humor eloquently expressed through its graphic presentation. Nothing, especially in print, has replaced it.”

Nickelodeon

Nickelodeon looks as good as it reads, thanks to the graphic design that doesn’t break the rules because it doesn’t acknowledge any.”

Weight Watchers

We were asked to develop a new approach for Weight Watchers' covers in order to better engage newsstand readership. We set up a system in which the subjects would interact with the cover lines.

Archaeology

For a period of several years we served as the Art Directors of the venerable Archaeology magazine, the journal of the Archaeological Institute of America. The task we were given was to use the power of design to convey the passion of the organization's membership.

Weekly Reader

"The new design is a total success…Hopefully the cover images to follow will be as simple and direct (and as fun!) as this one."

HOW

This was an interesting challenge: Create a new visual approach for HOW, the magazine for graphic designers.

We needed to develop a visual system that would allow individual issues to be implemented quickly and efficiently by a team of freelance designers and production artists working under the direction of an in-house art director.

We developed a flexible approach along with a detailed set of templates and standards that could be modified in order to imbue each issue with its own personality. It was a structured system that we didn't want to look too "system-like."
